Player of the match-Shreyas Iyer
Statements
Shreya Iyer: “When I went into bat, felt that the wicket was playing good. The talk between me and Ishan was to play the ball on merit, build a partnership. Let’s see what is in store for me (regarding his fitness for next game). I’m not someone who changes according to the bowler.”
Shikhar Dhawan: “Worked perfectly well for us, thanks to Keshav that he chose to bat (smiles). It was coming on nicely, but it stayed low. Plan was to take on the bowlers in the first 10 overs as we knew it could get difficult in the middle overs. When the dew came, you could see that it got easier. Very satisfied with the bowling unit, they are all young and these are good learnings for them. Especially Shahbaz.”
Keshav Maharaj: ” We didn’t expect dew to be such a factor here, that’s why we opted to bat. We tried what we could, Shreyas and Kishan played very well.”
Ishan Kishan: “When I was fielding they (fans in Ranchi) were asking me to get a hundred today, unfortunately I missed it. No worries, I’m just happy that my team won the game today and maybe in the next game I will give my best and make my team win again. It’s difficult here sometimes, because I played so many matches in Ranchi, it is not easy for the new batters to score runs, so we were looking to play according to the merit of the ball. Nortje, Rabada are too quick and sometimes the ball isn’t coming on properly and stopping a touch and the next ball it was coming really quick. So, I was planning to go for it if it was near my chest and not to play a pre-determined shot if the ball is not there.”
India win!
That’s all there is to it. India won by a seven-wicket margin in Ranchi. Ishan Kishan received a 93. Shreyas Iyer received a perfect score. The series is all square heading into Tuesday’s decider in Delhi.
The second ODI hundred for Iyer
Smacks a Rabada clean shot over extra cover for 4 runs to complete his century. What a performance from him this season. Under pressure, he remains calm and composed. India needs to win by 16 runs in the final seven overs.
Iyer into the 90s
Slight trepidation has crept in as India approaches the target. There is no net run rate implicated here. 242/3 after 41 overs. 37 needed out of 54 deliveries.
Iyer at centre stage!
Ishan Kishan was the aggressor between Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, who managed to keep the run rate under control after India was two down as in powerplay. With him gone, Iyer has guaranteed that the odd boundary continues to come, particularly after Fortuin. India is 231/3 after 39 overs.
Wicket for SA!
Ishan Kishan was 93 years old. The southpaw is upset. Going for another big one, I come across the fielder on the on side. India, 209/3, 200 points!
The attack persists as India inches closer to 279 points. Kishan pursues Nortje once more. Short, outside off, and sent for a six over a fine leg. Post 34 overs, India is 208/2.
Kishan on fire!
Ishan Kishan has let the floodgates open. Anrich Nortje delivered the second six at 145 kph. This is incredible. India is 198/2 after 32 overs.
The city’s favourite son MS Dhoni was also still striding out now to bat in the batting lineup and manoeuvring the ground around from behind the stumps the last time, in March 2019 when India played an ODI in Ranchi. More specifically, India was preparing for a global tournament, as they are now, but unlike now, it was to be in the same format as their current series (against Australia), and their initial squad had not simultaneously travelled across the Indian Ocean rather.

The lack
The ongoing ODI series against South Africa is so void of context – with the T20 World Cup starting in a week – that India’s biggest concern at the moment must be the growing injury list. Well after withdrawals of Jasprit Bumrah as well as Ravindra Jadeja from the main T20 World Cup squad, Deepak Chahar has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs; a BCCI release stated that Chahar had felt “stiffness in his back” after the third T20I against South Africa in Indore last Tuesday; the seamer’s recovery will now be monitored at the National Cricket Academy throughout Bengaluru.
