The annual Hindu festival of Navratri honors the goddess Durga. It takes place over nine nights (and ten days) during the months of Chaitra and Sharada (March/April on the Gregorian calendar). It is observed and celebrated in various ways throughout the Hindu-Indian cultural sphere.

Durga Ashtami is considered to be one of the most important and auspicious days of Navratri. Durga Ashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwina.  Maha Ashtami is another name for Durga Ashtami.. This year, Maha Ashtami has been observed on October 3rd, 2022, throughout the country.

The nine-day festival commemorates the triumph of good over evil and coincides with Durga Puja, which is also widely celebrated in the same spirit each year. This year, Sharad Navratri began on September 26 and will end on October 4th (Navmi), with Dussehra or Vijayadashami on the 5th.

  • NAVRATRI 2022: MAA SHWETAMBARDHARA PUJA

On the eighth day of Navratri, devotees worship Mata Mahagauri, also known as Maa Shwetambardhara. She is a manifestation of Devi Parvati, Lord Shiva’s consort. Unlike the ferocious goddess Kalaratri, Maha Gauri is calm and compassionate. She is dressed in white and mounted on a bull. Anyone who worships the goddess is said to be relieved of all suffering.

This avatar’s goddess has four hands, and her right arm is in the pose of calming fear, while her right lower hand holds a trident. Mahagauri has a tambourine (damaru) in her left upper arm, and the lower one is in the shape of a blessing. She rides a bull, lion, or tiger.

The hands are holding a trident, a lotus, and a drum, with the fourth in a blessing gesture. A rosary is sometimes used in place of the lotus. She is dressed in white and rides a white bull. Her weapons are the Trident, Tambourine (Damaru), Abhayamudra, and Varada mudra.

The entire nation comes together to celebrate the great occasion of Navratri. People all over the country are filled with joy, happiness, and excitement. Worshiping nine goddesses over nine days, stage decorations, recital of the legend, enactment of the story, and chanting of Hindu scriptures are all part of the celebrations.

The nine days are also a major crop season cultural event, with activities such as competitive pandal design and staging, family visits to these pandals, and public celebrations of Hindu classical and folk dances. Fasting is a common way for Hindu devotees to celebrate Navaratri.

On the final day, known as Vijayadashami, the statues are either immersed in a body of water such as a river or ocean, or the statue representing evil is burned with fireworks, symbolizing the destruction of evil.

During the nine-day festival, a variety of dances, including Garba and dandiya raas, are performed. Garba is a traditional dance in which participants clap their hands and move in a circle while making rhythmic gestures, whereas dandiya raas involves dancing with dandiya sticks to the beat of the music.

  • WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ASHTAMI?

We all celebrate Maha Ashtami with zeal and excitement, but have you ever considered why Maha Ashtami is so significant? Why is it important to perform all rituals in the correct order? It is now time to explain the true meaning of Maha Ashtami. Maa Durga is said to have given birth to eight Shaktis: Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Nasinghi, Indrani, and Chamuda.

Goddess Durga is the mother of the universe, according to Hindu mythology, and is believed to be the power behind the universe’s creation, preservation, and destruction. The Hindu warrior Goddess Durga is depicted as a beautiful woman with ten arms bearing divine weapons to protect each of us.

Maa Durga appeared in the form of Maa Durga after killing all the demons, and all the deities worshipped Goddess Durga and offered prayers to her. Durga Ashtami commemorates Goddess Durga’s victory over the demons Mahishasura, Chand Munda, Shumbh Nishumbh, and Raktabeej.

People who worship the Goddess with good intentions receive prosperity, happiness, wealth, and health. On this day, the weapons of Goddess Durga are worshiped, and the celebration is known as ‘Astra Puja.’ Durga Ashtami Vrat is celebrated with zeal in India’s northern and western regions. Durga Ashtami is known as ‘Bathukamma Panduga’ in some areas of Andhra Pradesh.
